How Technology Can Benefit Senior Adults

As technology continues to progress and the world becomes increasingly more reliant on it, there has been a shift in how we view aging. Technology has provided mature adults with many lifestyle benefits, allowing you to stay connected with friends and family and improve quality of life in different areas.

In this article, we are going to explore some of the ways technology can benefit your life.

Social Connectivity

Technology has made it easier for senior adults to stay connected with loved ones. Video chat platforms like Zoom, Skype, and Facetime allow you to have conversations with friends and family at any time, whether they live nearby or in a different state.

Video chatting isn’t the only way to stay connected, though. A March 2020 Pew survey revealed that early in the pandemic, 74 percent of Americans aged 65 and older had used email to communicate with someone. Additionally, a study from April 2020 found that among those 65 and older, 20 percent had participated in a virtual “party” or social gathering with friends or family.

Older adults who want to stay connected with people can use social media platforms to join groups that interest them, participate in virtual exercise classes, take online classes, and more to stay connected with their community.

Here are some Facebook groups for seniors who want to connect through social media:

  • Just Us Seniors: A place for older adults to interact with people in their age group.

  • Plant Based Over 50: Trying to live a healthier lifestyle? This group can help you focus on plant-based eating or help you incorporate better eating choices into your routine.

  • Elder Orphans: For individuals 55+ who live without the help of a spouse, partner, or children.

Health Monitoring

Advances in technology have made it possible for older adults to monitor their health and wellness from the comfort of their home. Devices like blood pressure monitors, pulse oximeters, and glucose meters allow you to monitor your vital signs and track any other changes.

Not to mention, smartwatches and other fitness trackers can provide helpful insights into daily activity levels and can encourage you to exercise more and improve your overall health.

Smartwatches from Apple and other providers typically have fall detection capabilities, which can be a huge benefit for senior adults. If the watch detects a hard fall, it taps you on the wrist, sounds an alarm, and displays an alert asking if you need help. According to Pew Research Center, 17 percent of Americans 50+ use a smart watch tracker.

Telehealth

Telehealth technology allows seniors to receive medical care from the comfort of their homes. This is especially important for seniors who might have mobility issues. Telehealth services allow seniors to connect with healthcare providers via video chat, providing them with easy access to medical care.

During the pandemic, healthcare providers were forced to adjust their methods of care. Because mature adults were at risk during COVID-19, telehealth allowed them to get the care they needed without having to take multiple trips and risk potential exposure.

Here are some other benefits of telemedicine according to Johns Hopkins Medicine:

  • Less exposure to germs

  • Some specialty practitioners have an advantage because they’re able to see your home environment

  • Family members can stay in the loop and provide information when needed

  • More convenient and comfortable for patients
