Safety Tips for Hot Weather: Staying Cool in the Summer

We might be getting close to cooler months, but that doesn’t mean high temperatures are going anywhere. Excessive heat isn’t safe for anyone, but it can be even more risky for seniors and people with health issues.

In this article, we’re going to explore ways seniors can stay cool, safe, and protected in the summer.

Why is it important for seniors to be vigilant about the temperature?

With the high temperatures comes the potential for heat-related illnesses. A few of these include heat syncope, heat cramps, heat edema, heat exhaustion, sunburn, and more. For seniors, exposure to these illnesses can cause other problems, and if you have an existing illness, it can make these symptoms worse.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), older adults don’t adjust as well as young people to sudden changes in temperature and are more likely to have chronic medical conditions that change normal body responses to heat. Additionally, seniors are more likely to take prescription medication that can affect the body’s ability to control its temperature or sweat.

Stay Hydrated

Don’t just drink water when you’re thirsty! During the summer, it is important to make sure you’re getting enough water every day. According to the National Council on Aging, a good rule of thumb is to drink one-third of your body weight every day. So, if you weigh 150 pounds, try to drink at least 50 ounces of water a day.

Avoid Exercising Outdoors

It’s important to get exercise every day, but if you’re going to do it outside make sure you’re not doing it during the hottest parts of the day. A better option would be using an indoor gym, swimming, or doing home workouts.

Keep an Eye on the Weather

Make sure to check the weather before making plans! The weather app will tell you when sunrise and sunset is, the UV index, wind conditions, humidity, and even if it is good running weather outside.

Take Care of Your Skin

You should put sunscreen on every day, even if you’re not planning on spending time outside. Not only can it provide UV protection, but it can also prevent increased signs of aging and skin cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, regular use of SPF 15 sunscreen can reduce your risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by about 40 percent and lower your melanoma risk by 50 percent.

Ask Your Doctor About Your Medications

According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, prescription medications can make older people more sensitive to heat. And according to the Mayo Clinic, there are some medicines that can cause heat intolerance:

➡️ Blood pressure medications

➡️ Antihistamines

➡️ Psychiatric medications

Make sure to talk to your doctor about how to properly store these medications, as well as how to stay safe in hot temperatures while taking them.

Stay Vigilant When It Comes to Heat

For seniors, it is important to stay cool and safe during the warmer months. It is crucial for everyone to keep an eye on the temperature, but especially older adults. Make sure you’re staying cool, wearing sunscreen, and prioritizing your health!
